Knolls I-80 at exit 41. BLM fee $6.00 per parked car or truck.
Dual Sport riders,
PCMC DS rides are scheduled for the 2nd Saturday of each month, March – November of 2012. Non-members are welcome. All participants must sign PCMC’s liability waiver. (If you don’t want to receive these email notices, just tell me).
Park City Motorcycle Club’s first 2012 DS ride is scheduled for 3/10 at Knolls ATV/OHV. We will meet 0830 at Jeremy Ranch Park & Ride lot (I-80, xit 141) to pool transport and depart 0900.
We expect to arrive at Knolls at 1100, unload bikes and ride for an hour or so. Back to the cars/trucks for a lunch stop and out for another round afterward. We’ll start back toward PC at 1500 to 1600.
Knolls is a BLM recreation site at S side of I-80 at xit 41. Fee is $6 to park a rig; no fee for riding. Facilities: toilets. No food, water, shelter or nearby stores; so pack your own supplies.
Riding at Knolls is on expansive, dry lake bed sand & sand dunes; some rocky hills are optional. I call it class 3 (on scale of 1 – 6 where 6 is almost impossibly difficult). If the sand is damp/firm it’s an easier class 2. We choose Knolls for Winter, Spring or Fall because the West Desert is usually cool – not cold - and the sand is probably firm enough that time of year. Light dirt bikes and smaller “adventure” bikes with aggressive tire tread (knobby) are recommended. (Paddle tires might be overkill but they would work). We’ll ride about 25 – 40 miles so fuel range is not a worry.
Last year’s March DS ride at Knolls was canceled due to late winter storms. (This year we haven’t had any of that …yet). Let me know if you’re joining this ride; if you have truck or trailer space to carry other riders & gear or if you need a ride for yourself, bike & gear. Please contact me by Mar 6 IF you plan to ride Knolls with us. If the weather is foul or there are fewer than 3 riders we’ll cancel this date & I’ll notify those who have ‘signed up’.
Knolls is a good place to practice & improve novice sand-riding skills or for experienced sand-riders to just have fun. As the year progresses we move to more challenging (and higher altitude) riding areas. We look forward to riding trails with you.
